The Skid Steer loader, a versatile piece of construction equipment, has an interesting history that dates back to the late 1950s. Its invention is credited to Cyril and Louis Keller, brothers from Rothsay, Minnesota, who were tasked with creating a machine that could maneuver efficiently in tight spaces for cleaning turkey barns. Their solution was a compact, three-wheeled loader with a unique steering mechanism that allowed the wheels on each side to operate independently, enabling the machine to “skid” and turn within its own length. This innovation caught the attention of Melroe Manufacturing Company, which later became Bobcat Company, and they acquired the design. In 1960, the first four-wheeled Skid Steer loader, the M400, was introduced, revolutionizing the industry with its enhanced stability and versatility. Over the years, Skid Steers have evolved to become indispensable in construction, agriculture, and landscaping, renowned for their ability to operate various attachments and perform a multitude of tasks in confined spaces.
